Glassell School of Art: Annual Juried Student Exhibition & The Fundamentals

Downstairs at The Glassell School of Art is their Annual Juried Student Exhibition and upstairs is work by students enrolled in 5 studio courses of fundamental art skills. The position of The Glassell is that of a major breeding ground of Houston talent and this two-part exhibit  underscores this. The drawback to Glassell exhibits is that they are produced strictly for students of the school; they do not advertise exhibits or hold openings/receptions. This means you have to keep up with what they’re doing on their website. I’d also recommend following Patrick Palmer on Facebook since he posts info on his own.

Now to the work on view now. I was most looking forward to seeing Damon Thomas who is known for blue ceramic work of birds, dogs and human figures. His devotion to these seemingly simple subjects has resulted in complex juxtapositions that only comes from “living” with a subject for a long period of time (something artists typically abhor). Thomas’ successful pieces provoke thought in the way good art should.

New to me is the work of Jong Nim D’Andrea. D’Andrea uses the over-used technique of dripping paint (the world does not need another Pollock, already!). I normally walk past such work but these pieces use dripping paint as a means to an end – that of creating narrative landscapes. These compositions remind me of the HUGE ancient Roman paintings which depict an entire city such as this piece from Gentile Belini.

Another signifiant piece is that by William Isbel which depicts a man pulling his face apart. No, it does not make you smile but it does keep your attention. Again, a requirement of successful artworks. The wood sculpture placed in the same area as the painting creates a very interesting dialogue, also.

UPDATE: Patrick Palmer rightfully pointed out the relative costs of various art programs throughout Houston, none of which I disagree with. My point was that the financial commitment expressed by Glassell attendees could be considered attractive to collectors. These artists have carved out the financial and time resources to devote to their work which separates them from a lot of other young artists.
