Avis Frank: Voids, Shadows and Believable Things

Avis Frank is currently exhibiting the work of Chris Bakay, Houston, TX and Brad Nelson, Falmouth, MA. These two artists don’t know each other in person but are kindred spirits when it comes to their visual vocabulary. It’s a credit to Avis Frank that we see such harmony in work from artists separated by 1,885 miles. Each artists’ work is minimal, modern and is composed of two primary components.

Chris Bakay’s “Void” series’ two primary components are pigment on paper and what looks like drywall. The colored paper component is what other abstract artists might consider their finished artwork. Bakay, however, is not done/satisfied with that “one note”. He uses that component as the basis of a more complex construct using a sheet of 1/8″ (or so) gypsum to cover a significant amount of the paper component. The result should be considered a wall-mounted sculpture, not a “painting” for goodness sake. Prices are in the $750 to $2,000 range.

Brad Nelson shares with us work from his series “The Construction of Believable Things“. The two primary components of Nelson’s work are stone figures and homogenous backgrounds. For me, this work is VERY modern while at the same time lacking a firm footing in time. Magritte fans should be reminded of some other stone figures but Nelson uses them in a different way.
