Archway Gallery: Allison Rathan – The Cutting Bridle

Allison Rathan has been a member of Archway Gallery for just about a year and this is her “feature exhibit”. This German-born portraitist is a storyteller. A lot of good traits are demonstrated in her work such as the ability to use different types of people as subjects (including herself) and being able to create light, intimate moments. As much as I’d like to get into each painting to figure out the story, or make up my own, I’m distracted by some of the backgrounds. To me, the subjects aren’t comfortable in their spaces. It’s almost as if one artist did the background and another did the subject. Also, I prefer to see just one or two types of media in an artist’s solo exhibit; to me, it is a much more sophisticated approach.

The artist’s reception is Saturday, August 9th, 5-8pm, 2305 Dunlavy St., Houston, 77006.

The work is on view through September 4th.
