Capitol Street Gallery: Marvin F. Gould – Exploring the Mark

Capitol Street Gallery is an artist-run space that has studios and a large exhibit space. They’ve had just a few shows but I’ve been told there are more coming. This is a place to pay attention to.

The current exhibit is work by Marvin F. Gould. The work is graphite and charcoal on paper. Gould’s work is similar to some of Richard Serra’s in that the artist is exploring “the mark” and nothing else. By eliminating, representation, form, color, surface, etc. from the process, the work is about simplicity. This type of minimal art is captivating in the implication of movement. Seeing the work in person is much more satisfying because you can appreciate the combination of VERY wide strokes and VERY narrow scratches.

If you appreciate this kind of work, Gould’s pieces may fit into your collection (if they can fit on your walls – some of them are rather large).
