Galeria Regina: Gabriel Prusmack – Driving Passion Further

Tonight, Galeria Regina welcomed Gabriel Prusmack. I’ve known of Gabriel’s work for some time now and was looking forward to what this new batch of work had to say about this young artist. As I looked at his works, he was saying things (at least in my own head) like, “I like to build things”, “I like bikes” and “have you seen what I can do with an ironing board?” Prusmack’s work, you see, consists of wood pieces assembled into “canvases” and subjects such as cars, bikes and people applied via spray paint and stencils. Prusmack fits into the very modern, current/contemporary community of “street artists” (vandals?) finding their place in the world of fine art. Houston has seen this recently, most notably at the Station Museum of Contemporary Art in addition to Peveto Gallery.

In the way that fashion photography of the 1970’s infiltrated the fine art world, street artists of the 2010’s are being accepted by the fine art world as “artists”. Prusmack pushes his medium away from urban walls to surfaces he builds out of reclaimed wood pieces in his native Galveston, TX. However, his compositions, colors and subjects are firmly rooted in the street art mentality. Looking at his work, you sense an experienced and skilled artist at work but one that is not afraid of pushing your preconceptions of fine art. Frankly, I consider his work a “buy” at this point of his career if you want to add depth to your collection. He is an artist who speaks of his time in a captivating way that is easy to live with.
