“Art can be happy” – Kelyne Reis

Reis says this with great enthusiasm and conviction. Her relationship with art as both a creator and leader of various arts groups in various countries (such as Gruppe Lulu in Germany), speaks volumes of her conviction.

When I first saw Reis’ work, I was captivated by two qualities: 1) technical precision and 2) flamboyant color palette. Then, when I first talked to her, I learned she was born in Brazil (explaining the palette) and lived for many years in Germany (explaining the precision)! This 2-part nature informs all of Reis’ work from the creative process to the finished works.

The current series of work, titled “Digital Embracing” is a very firm combination of intuitive and analytical skills. Try to keep up with me on this, OK? First, she creates a large piece inspired by a digital manipulation of her composition titled “Embrace”. Then a small area is (visually) selected and used as the inspiration for a second painting. Next is the selection of a portion of the second to create a third. Finally, selection of a portion of the third results in the creation of a fourth and final piece. The set of 4 paintings carry the titles “D.E. #1”, “Zoomed #1”, “Boosted #1” and she’s not yet named the fourth stage. If this feels awkward, don’t worry; I’m just explaining all this to demonstrate the structure designed into the work.

The actual creation of the pieces lays in stark contrast to all this structure. Lines are created intuitively, colors are applied and adjusted intuitively, again and again until a work is finished. The viewer is, of course unaware of all this but if you like the work, it’s fun to know the back story.

Reis’ determination and success in the art scene, in combination with very high quality work, makes for a great buy opportunity. Without gallery representation, she is free to set prices accordingly. As always, you should consider the appeal of the work first, then look at the exhibition history before making a purchase. Reis’ history is not disappointing.

A unique thing she is doing with fellow artist Tania Botelho, is creating cell phone cases (iPhone 5 only), individually signed, limited to an edition of 25 and selling them under cost for the strict purpose of allowing new art collectors to own a piece of artwork without spending a lot of money. The reason is to allow people to “get used to having an original work of art”. Only 25 were made and not many are left. This is the first product in their “WEArtBLE / USArtBLE” project.

Go visit her at Silver Street Studios #321 during one of their “Second Saturday” open studios (2-5 p.m.) or send her an email.
