The Jung Center: Hilda Rueda

The art program at The Jung Center is one of the most overlooked viewing/purchasing opportunities in Houston. That makes it a perfect place for me to go look at work and share with you here.

The work of Hilda Rueda is in one room that is used for workshops, hence the furniture in the room. Looking past that is easy, however, when you become captivated with the portraiture Rueda does so well. I particularly enjoy the disconnect between subject and background; a modern take on classic portraits that inform the viewer about the subject by using background elements. The subjects Rueda draws on seem historical in nature based on the titles of the works. The framing elevates the work to a higher level than a lot of emerging artists, also.

If you appreciate this style, Rueda’s prices are hard to beat. This is a very good buy opportunity.

The exhibit is up through October 29, 2014 at The Jung Center (5200 Montrose Blvd., 77006, Monday – Thursday: 9am – 7:30pm, Friday: 9am – 4pm, Saturday: 10 am – 4 pm)
