Penny & Rob McDonnald

Penny McDonald has created artwork her entire life from whatever she could find. Not coming from a privileged background, this necessitated “thinking outside the box” from an early age with regard to materials and projects. Attracted to fabric work early on, McDonald welcomed any material with which she could say something.

This lifetime of creativity is immediately apparent in the work being made today of found objects. Thankfully, she has brought her husband, Rob, along for the creative ride that is “object trouté”. The object trouté artistic media is firmly rooted in modern art. It is a tricky, difficult vocabulary in which to speak but for some artists, it’s natural. (See also my visit with Solomon Kane.) Frankly, I think it’s rather intimidating to take a pile of junk and say something with it!

The works presented here are a combination of both artists; Penny’s are more conceptual and provoking (skeletons and teeth) whereas Rob’s are more whimsical and playful (the robots). They make work together and promote work together so I’m keeping them together in one blog post for you.

I consider this a buy opportunity for several reasons. First, the work is narrative – stories are told in three dimensions which is a difficult thing to do. Second, the complexity of the narrative is thoughtfully supported by the complexity of materials. Third, the asking prices are appropriate for emerging artists in Houston. Fourth, the pieces in our personal collection bring us joy every day and we just want more. (How’s that for honest?)

  1. Great review. I love the dark, macabre theme of Penny’s work and how Rob’s engineer side shows in his. They are so talented and both have distinct and provoking work. We hope to own some McDonald pieces (from both artists) one day!
